Primož Pugelj is a sculptor who focuses on form and is fascinated with content. In order to create the desired effect, he uses a variety of materials. He presents us with images that at first, owing to their monumental size, may appear to be obvious in meaning; but soon the viewer comes to realize that, for a proper understanding of these works, something more than just a superficial glance is necessary. The artist has explored primary human functions, such as breathing, walking and sleeping. Recently he has focused on the human portrait, but a type of portrait relating to the mask and object. Instead of the plastic mask of the urban man, however, he is captivated by, and finds true inspiration in, the ritual mask that is painted on the faces of the indigenous New Zealand population with its phenomena in contemporary society, ranging from the most basic occurrences to those perverted elements of human existence that are becoming more and more common. Primoz Pugelj lives and works in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
